Caton Hall

The Story. The Provenance. The Essence of English Vintage Heritage.

Set in the Lune Valley near Lancaster, Caton Hall is a house steeped in centuries of English history. Its roots reach back to the 12th century, when the Gernet family held the manor; by the 13th century, the “de Caton” line had established themselves as lords of the manor. Across the centuries it passed through some of Lancashire’s most notable families — the Curwens, the de Lancasters, and the Lords Mounteagle, with William Parker remembered for his role in exposing the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Later owners included the Baines family, the Croftes of Claughton, and Sir Henry Compton, before the present house rose in the early 19th century, its sandstone walls and Georgian sash windows still overlooking the valley today. Unlike many country houses that became museums or fell into abandonment, Caton Hall remained a true family home. Each era left its layers: richly carved mahogany and heavy wardrobes of the Victorian period, Edwardian refinement and a billiard table, interwar glamour with mirrors and curved-glass dressing tables, and the mid-20th century’s resilience with Ministry of Defence furniture, rotary telephones, and bicycles leaned against plastered walls. The 1970s left their mark in an unforgettable way — with an avocado-green kitchen, a symbol of adaptation and modern taste.

For over a century, Caton Hall was home to the Beeson family. Gladys Madeline Beeson lived here with her family, her son Dr Brian Beeson later serving as a Home Office Pathologist. With his wife, Barbara Beeson, and their children — who remain living today — the house continued as a place of continuity and memory.

In recent years, Caton Hall has fallen into disrepair, though the middle floor still remains intact and lived in. Today, as the grandchildren of Gladys Madeline Beeson carefully sort through generations of belongings in preparation for the sale of their loved family home, the long story of Caton Hall turns its final page.

We have been fortunate enough to acquire a selection of its antiques, heirlooms, and curiosities — pieces that carry not only craftsmanship and patina, but the warmth and romance of a house that has been lived in, adapted, and loved across centuries.

Provenance: By descent from Gladys Madeline Beeson, mother of Dr Brian Beeson (Home Office Pathologist), Caton Hall, Lune Valley. Retained in family ownership for generations.
